If you reside anywhere in or near Southern Ontario, the frigid temperatures and endless snowfalls of last winter are still fresh in your memory. It was one of the coldest winters on record for the GTA, with the ice storm that essentially shut the area down serving as the pinnacle of what was an unbearably cold season. The Farmers’ Almanac is credited with accurately predicting last year’s record low temperatures and snowfall, and if they are to be believed this time around, it looks like more of the same.
Thinking about another four to six months of the weather that we experienced last year in Southern Ontario is enough to make you want to head to Florida for early retirement. But since that’s not an option for most working homeowners, call on the experts at Roofing For Less to make sure roof repairs are performed on your home before the cold sets in.
The reason you won’t see many roof repairs being done during the heart of the winter is very simple: it’s dangerous. Working on an angled roof filled with snow or covered with ice presents obvious dangers to the workers. Even for the experts, the level of safety during the winter is too low when conducting any roof repairs.
On top of that, there are certain manufacturer specifications regarding the minimum temperature for installing shingles. Shingles will not adhere properly if the conditions and temperature don’t allow for it, which could itself be a danger and one we at Roofing For Less would never consider for the safety of the homeowners and their families.
With that in mind, it’s imperative for homeowners to check the state of their roof now and figure out what level of repair their roof requires, if any, so it can be handled before the weather becomes too much of a factor. And it’s not to say that we won’t do any sort of roof repair during the winter season, but we also won’t expose our workers to the dangers of the extreme weather conditions that are being predicted. Essentially, what that means for homeowners is that roof repairs will get done, but it will always be weather-permitting.
Commercial flat roofs are not exempt from this, either; just because the roof isn’t angular does not mean that working in extreme cold or with the surface covered in snow or ice doesn’t present problems. We ask all commercial building owners to also check the condition of their roofs and assess the level of roof repairs needed. For commercial flat roofing, we primarily install Soprema torch, but we can also perform EPDM cold membrane and tar and gravel applications.
Again, we urge customers to consider having any roof repairs or installations done now so our workers are safe and your roof is able to protect you as well. Winter can be fun as long as you’re prepared, so as a home or building owner, do what it takes to make sure you are ready for what looks like another extremely cold season.
